Finding Stillness and Transforming Education

Updated: Mar 25

Early this morning, as I walked through the streets of my coastal village in Portugal, I encountered a sight that transported me back to my time in Thailand—a monk in orange robes receiving alms. With profound respect, I offered him the fruit I had brought for breakfast, and what followed was a moment that left a lasting impression.

I shared with him a bit about my journey, explaining my decision to step away from formal work in order to be at home and fully present with my children, sharing mindfulness and meditation as part of our daily lives together. While this choice feels deeply aligned with my values, I admitted that at times, I wonder if I’m doing enough to share all of my years of training with others in a broader sense. Listening intently, the monk’s eyes filled with tears as he spoke words that resonated deeply:

"The most important gift you can give the world is to work on yourself. In making time for your children and yourself, you are already changing the world."

These words reminded me of why I’m building Harmony Alternative’s Global Classroom—a space that embodies a mindful, holistic approach to learning. The foundation of everything we do is rooted in a belief that transformation begins from within. This is not just about creating a different kind of education; it’s about empowering young minds and hearts to find stillness, cultivate inner peace, and learn in a way that connects them to their own truth and curiosity.

As we spoke, the monk shared his yearning to return to Thailand, where spiritual connection and mindful living are prioritized over material pursuits. He reflected on how, in contrast, the focus on money seemed to drive many people here. This resonated deeply, aligning with our vision at Harmony Alternative’s Global Classroom. We, too, are excited to ground ourselves in Southeast Asia, where these philosophies and ways of living are more apparent and deeply ingrained in the culture.

Far from being in conflict, my choices—devoting myself to my family and building a micro school—are part of the same deeply intentional journey. It’s not about doing more; it’s about living and working in alignment with values that prioritize well-being, connection, and growth. Harmony Alternative’s Global Classroom is a reflection of this belief.

The monk’s message has given me a renewed sense of purpose as I support others through this project. If we want to create real change, it starts with ourselves—finding stillness, fostering peace, and inspiring others to do the same.
